Inscribed on a monument & depicted on an oilcloth scroll which was wrapped around a fife and discovered in a trunk in a descendant's attic:
"Enlisted at Chesterville, Morrow Co., Ohio, Apr 22, 1861 and mustered into U. S. service as a private of Capt. Henry Rigby's Co. G 20th Regt., Ohio Vol. Infantry to serve three mo. Honorably discharged with Company, Aug. 28, 1861. Expiration of term of service: Reenlisted Sep. 3, 1861 as a private of Company A 20th Regiment, Ohio Voluntary Infantry under Capt. Elisha Olyatt for three years. Reenlisted as a Veteran Volunteer at Vicksburg, Miss. for three years. Col's Charles Whittlesey and Manning F. Force commanding. Served in Logans Div. 7th Corps Army of the Tenn, and engaged in the following battles. Ft. Donelson Tenn., Feb 14-16, 1862. Shiloh, Tenn., April 6-7. Bolivar, Tenn., Aug. 20, Tuka, Miss., Sept. 19-20. Big Hatchie River, Oct 5. Hankins Ferry, Jan 3, '63, Raymond, May 12. Champion Hills, May 16. Siege of Vicksburg, July 9-16. Baker's Creek, Feb. 4, '64. Kenesaw Mt., Ga. June 9-30. Nichajack Creek, July 2-5. Atlanta, July 22. Jonesboro, Aug. 31 abd Sept 1. Lovejoy Station, Sept 2-6. Charge to the Sea, Nov. 15 - Dec 10.. Siege of Savannah, Dec. 10-21. Cocotago, S. C. Jan 14-16, 1865, Drangeburg, Feb. 12-15. Columbia, Feb. 16-17.Cheraw, Mar 2-3. Bentonville, NC, Mar 19 and Goldsboro, Mar. 21.
He was accidently WOUNDED at Warsaw, KY, in May 1862, losing his left eye. WOUNDED in left leg below the knee by gunshot at Champion Hills.
CAPTURED same time by General Kirby, was a prisoner in hospital about six weeks. Rejoined Regt. at Vicksburg, later treated in hospital at Memphis, Tenn. WOUNDED July 22, '64 at Atlanta. Detailed as Fifer during the last year of service. HONORABLY DISCHARGED July 15, 1865 with company. Close of War."
